A Letter from Lakewood City Schools Graduates, Retired and Current Teachers, Former Parents, and Staff in Support of Trish Hendy for School Board
Dear Lakewood Community,
As a collective of Lakewood City School graduates, retired and current teachers, former parents, and staff both near and far, we have been disheartened to hear of the changes implemented in the elementary school day schedule resulting in drastic reductions to both music 60%) and physical education (50%) class times.
The addition of instruction in STEM and digital literacy is well-intentioned and we can appreciate that it seeks to meet the advancing needs of today’s world. Still, we know that it is possible for the integration of these subjects to be carried out in a way that does not impair student experience and engagement.
We believe that Trish Hendy is the best candidate for the Lakewood City Schools Board of Education. In our personal interactions with Trish, we have come to know her as hard-working, caring, and honest. Consistent with our Lakewood tradition, Trish Hendy values art and music education, and we support the changes she has proposed to restore music, art, and PE offerings in the district.
We know that, if elected, Trish will be a tireless advocate for the students of Lakewood Schools, just as she was during our time at LHS. Trish Hendy supported and believed in all of us when we were Lakewood students; we hope that she is given the opportunity to share her passion for Lakewood and Lakewood’s students as a member of the Board of Education. Vote Trish Hendy for Lakewood Board of Education
Respectfully,
Greg Culley LHS Class of 2010

"Sorry for this novel, but it is a very important topic for our society and the well-being of future generations.
I was an awkward, closeted introvert and very quiet in high school. Drama club was one of the main things that got me comfortable with who I am and open up now. (I could thank David Gannon and Bill Langenhop here too and i do absolutely 100%, but I'm not voting for them right now 😜)
In junior year, when I finally worked in the Civic Auditorium and met the lovely Trish Hendy , I discovered her energy was contagious! So full of life, ready to crack a joke for a little humor supplement, all while being professional and so very productive.
She helps get teens excited about theater, one of the "swept aside" arts; making it fun and educational. I never left a huddle confused because of her attention to detail. She would stop and explain if you had questions and made sure you understood.
Bottom line of this post is that the arts are important because they help us connect with others on a more personal level because of shared interests. Please let it sink in that more and more related arts classes are being limited or removed from the curriculum. To kids who are not "sporty" or "musically inclined", this is devastating.
When you vote to fill that board of education slot, I would like you to stop and think of the other Jesse's out there.
The quiet introvert that has anxieties making friends; who just might need an arts class or club to finally tap into their full potential.
Thank you for your time"

"Music has been a transformative force in my life. In high school, orchestra gave me a sense of purpose and inspired me to strive for excellence. It helped me get into college, and now I run a successful string quartet that has performed with renowned artists such as Smokey Robinson and at major events such as ACL Live, SXSW and the Country Music Awards. I am grateful for the support of people like Trish Hendy, who have always believed in me and helped me to achieve my dreams."

"There are many memories I can still pull from time spent in elementary music and PE that remind me how valuable they both were - a strong foundation for engaging with the world and with my own health. In my career now, I’m keenly aware of having to use all the elements of our human experience to create inclusive, and hopefully inspiring, design that seeks to have a positive impact in communities. Trish Hendy has been a positive force in Lakewood, helping guide and mentor countless students over the course of her long tenure with Lakewood City Schools. I’m hard-pressed to think of someone harder working or more committed to student success, and I’m grateful for the impact she’s had on me personally. I know Trish will be a strong advocate for putting kids’ best interests ahead of logistical or financial obstacles, many of which she’s already working to solve."
